To close a file descriptor for a pipe in C, use the close()
function.
Assuming you have opened the pipe using the pipe()
function and stored the file descriptors in variables pipefd[0]
and pipefd[1]
, the following code shows how to close them:
// Close the read end of the pipe
close(pipefd[0]);
// Close the write end of the pipe
close(pipefd[1]);
Note that once a file descriptor has been closed, it cannot be used again. It is recommended to set the variable to -1
after you have closed it, to prevent accidental reuse of the file descriptor.
