Yes, R or Python sessions can be maintained over SSH in VS Code consistently. VS Code has an extension called "Remote - SSH" that allows you to connect to a remote server using SSH and work on your source code there. Once connected, you can use the integrated terminal to start an R or Python session and work with it just like you would locally. The sessions will be maintained even if you disconnect from the server, so when you reconnect later, you can pick up right where you left off.
