Subsets should be switched and the maximum number of characters reached according to the specifications of the GS1 General Specifications. The number of characters that can be encoded in a GS1 128 barcode depends on the type of data being encoded and the length of the data. For example, a GTIN-14 code can encode up to 14 digits, while an SSCC-18 code can encode up to 18 digits.

When the maximum character limit is reached, the barcode will automatically switch to a new subset if necessary. The subset switching is done automatically by the encoding software, so there is no need for any manual intervention.
