A DVR file is a video file format associated with the Microsoft Digital Video Recording (DVR) system, which is used to record television shows and other content from a broadcast signal. DVR files are typically created and used by Windows Media Center, a discontinued media player and digital video recorder application that was included in various versions of the Windows operating system.

DVR files contain video and audio data, as well as metadata about the recorded content, such as the show's title, air date, and episode information. The format is based on Microsoft's Advanced Systems Format (ASF), which is a container format designed to store synchronized multimedia content, including video, audio, and metadata.

Due to its proprietary nature and limited compatibility, the DVR file format is not as widely supported as other video formats like MP4 or AVI. To play DVR files on devices or media players that do not support the format, you may need to convert them to a more common format using a video converter software.
