Are the variables initialized to zero by the default constructor when it is defaulted?

Yes, when a class is defaulted, its members - including variables - are initialized to their default values. For numeric types such as int or float, the default value is zero. For bool type, the default value is false. For pointer types, the default value is nullptr.
